In deciding to not ask my then-girlfriend’s father (or parents) for his blessing on my upcoming proposal to his daughter, there was something I came back to the most:

Would I still propose if he didn’t give his blessing? I would, so it’s disrespectful to ask him when it has no bearing on my actions.

Good point. Blessing is one thing, maybe, but asking permission, especially just from the father, that repulses me. Even if you don’t mean it that way, it strongly suggests that the woman is property. It’s worse than the “giving away” of the daughter, which I also dislike.
